Classic Cars & Beautiful Wairarapa Wedding

Last weekend Classic Rides provided classic transport for a beautiful Wairarapa wedding on a glorious summer afternoon. The wedding cars looked splendid driving down country roads to deliver the bridal party to the stunning rural location.

Our thanks to Nat and Matt for inviting us to contribute to their special day.

Want to drive an interesting classic car? Don’t have a day to spare?

Classic Rides cars are also available on an hourly basis – a fun thing to do anytime, perhaps on a long summer evening after work, or during a holiday break or weekend. We can provide printed short itineraries to guide you on the country roads in the area, with information on some of the points of interest along the way.

The hourly rate is only $50 for any car, and includes fuel. We can also arrange comparative drives if you want to try two or more cars (if available) over the hire period.

NB: Short hires are subject to car availability and Terms & Conditions are the same as for longer hire periods

Our Daimler Conquest Century (The Old Dame) was brand new, and had just been sold by Gee Motors of Napier to its first owner.

You can hire this classic 1950’s luxury car and find out why  Autocar magazine said “The Conquest Century is one of those cars that is right, absolutely right.”

What else was happening in 1957?

  • The British motor industry was the largest exporter of cars in the world – how things change!
  • The largest manufacturing companies were all American, in fact 70% of world production, but virtually all for the home market.
  • The Formula One Drivers Championship was won by Juan Manuel Fangio, for the fourth consecutive year. He drove a Maserati 250F (V12  2490cc, 315bhp)
  • New cars introduced in 1957 included, from the UK: Vauxhall Victor, Jaguar XK150, Lotus 7 and Wolseley 1500. From Italy: Fiat 500 and Alfa Romeo 2000. From the US: Pontiac Bonneville, Rambler Rebel, and Ford Fairlane 500. From Japan: the original Toyota Corona and Nissan Skyline. And from Czechoslovakia, the Tatra Diplomat, a six seater saloon with a rear mounted air-cooled V8 engine.
  • The Chev Corvette was offered with a fuel injected V8, producing 283bhp – a remarkable amount of power for the time.
  • Saab introduced seat belts as standard equipment, the first car manufacturer to do so.

Book a Classic Rides car in July and August – save 25% on hire fees

The booking can be for any time, as long as it is made in July or August.

However, winter is a great time to experience the Wairarapa countryside, the roads are quieter and so are the cafes.

And don’t dismiss open top cars just because it is winter. On a crisp clear day, put on warm hats and gloves, turn up the heating, drop the hood and enjoy truly invigorating motoring.  If the weather should turn nasty, just put the hood up, keep cosy and pop into the nearest cafe for a hot coffee.
